How is limewash different from painting brick on the First Coast?
Paint forms a film on top of the brick, limewash soaks into the masonry and becomes part of it. That mineral bond gives limewash a soft, aged, matte look that a modern paint simply cannot replicate, and it is fully breathable, which matters in Northeast Florida humidity. Limewash also weathers naturally over the years rather than peeling off like film-forming paints when they fail.
Does limewash work on Jacksonville-area brick and block?
Yes, unsealed brick, block, and stucco are all excellent candidates for limewash on the First Coast. Previously painted brick can also be limewashed after careful prep, though the depth and movement of the finish are different than on raw brick. Our crews inspect the surface during the free estimate and let you know whether limewash, brick painting, or another approach is the best fit.
How long does limewash last in the humid First Coast climate?
A properly applied limewash finish holds up 10 to 20 years on First Coast masonry, and instead of peeling like paint it slowly softens and weathers, which most homeowners find charming rather than a defect. Some homeowners refresh the finish every 5 to 7 years to keep the color crisp, others let it age naturally.
Can I control how heavy or light the limewash finish looks?
Yes, and this is one of the reasons homeowners on the First Coast love it. We apply limewash in layers and can leave more or less of the original brick color showing through, from a heavy, near-solid coverage to a translucent whitewash that lets the brick texture and color come through. The ideal candidate is unsealed brick or block in sound condition, with no active peeling, efflorescence, or moisture damage.
