Deck Staining FAQs in the First Coast

How often should I stain a deck on the First Coast?

Most decks in Northeast Florida need a fresh stain every 2 to 4 years depending on sun exposure, wood species, and whether you used a transparent, semi-transparent, or solid finish. Docks and decks right on the water may need staining sooner, and shaded decks in mature-tree neighborhoods can go a little longer. Waiting past the point where water stops beading is usually waiting too long.

Which deck stain type works best in the humid Jacksonville climate?

Semi-transparent penetrating oil-based stains and premium waterborne hybrids like Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck and Benjamin Moore Arborcoat are the workhorses on the First Coast, because they let the wood breathe while blocking UV. Solid stains give the longest color life but hide grain and can peel if the wood is not fully dry when applied. Transparent stains look beautiful the first year but wear fast in Florida sun.

Do you strip old stain off my deck before restaining?

When needed, yes, we clean and prep every deck so the new stain penetrates evenly. That may mean pressure washing at the right pressure to open the grain, applying a wood brightener to remove mildew and tannin bleed, and sanding failing solid-stain areas. Our deck crews on the First Coast pick the least aggressive prep that still delivers a clean, absorbent surface.

Can you stain a deck that has already grayed?

Yes, weathered gray wood is essentially UV-damaged fiber on the surface, and we can restore it by cleaning off the gray layer and reopening the grain with a wood brightener. From there we stain with a semi-transparent or solid product depending on how uniform you want the color. Homes in older Jacksonville Beach and Atlantic Beach neighborhoods routinely see this kind of restoration during our free estimate.

What should I look for on my deck before staining?

Check for soft or spongy boards, loose fasteners or popped nails, split or splintered edges, mildew streaks, and areas where water no longer beads. Salt-air homes on the First Coast also see more corrosion around nails and screws, and near-water docks can have marine-grade issues that require different products. We flag any wood that needs replacement during the estimate so the finish is going onto sound material.

When is the best time to stain a deck in Northeast Florida?

Dry stretches in late fall, winter, and early spring are the sweet spot on the First Coast, when humidity is lower and afternoon storms are rare. We can absolutely stain in summer, we just plan around rain and give the wood time to dry after pressure washing. Our crews check the forecast daily and adjust rather than staining onto a wet substrate.
